So why do a nutritional detox?
We live in a toxic world where our food has changed dramatically over the past several decades. It has now become more processed, genetically modified, filled with additives and preservatives, used to prolong the shelf life of, as well as treated with multiple pesticides or herbicides in order to try and protect it from nature’s influences. We are finding that this is leading to multiple chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disorders, autistic spectrum disorders and cardiovascular diseases.
We are also exposed to more stress in our lives than ever before and this impairs our bodies abilities to detoxify, as stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, focus more on preparing the body for the flight or fight response than on the repair and healing response.
As a Society, we have also significantly decreased our intake in fruits and vegetables. In fact one study claims that Americans only get one and a half servings of vegetables per day (and includes French fries). Vegetables, fruits as well as spices and herbs contain phytonutrients (plant based chemicals) that are critical to our body’s abilities to detoxify.
Lastly we are addicted to sugar and caffeine both of which in her bodies abilities to detoxify when consumed in large quantities.
Going through a nutritional detox helps us break these addictions.
What is exactly a nutritional detox?
A nutritional detox is when we combine a specific diet, such as an elimination diet, that supports our body’s ability to detoxify with nutritional supplements that enhance the metabolic processes within the liver and kidney.
By going through an elimination diet we are able to remove from our diet things that may interfere with our body's ability to further detoxify as well as foods that may be contributing to our overall metabolic dysfunction. We identified foods that may be causing us to feel sluggish, have headaches, joint pain and other symptoms associated with toxic overload.
Certain nutrients taken in higher quantities, such as garlic, Rosemary, green tea extracts, hops extract, turmeric as well as vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B12, vitamin B6, magnesium, selenium, etc. help facilitate and support enzymes that to support detoxification.
