So to mark the 45th anniversary of Elvis' death (Aug. 16, 1977), put your suspicious minds at ease and savor this survey of the best of his breadth: 20 essential Elvis songs that make you turn your head (and pelvis) toward the speakers.
Elvis Presley made 31 films in 13 years, from the 1956 Civil War Western Love Me Tender to the 1969 social drama Change of Habit, in which he portrayed a hip young doctor who unwittingly falls for a nun portrayed by Mary Tyler Moore. From the start, Hollywood was as anxious to harness his charisma and star power as Presley was to follow in the Oscar-winning footsteps of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, who had parlayed their own pop stardom into respected film careers. His best films show his potential: the raw energy, the presence, the commitment to embody a character that was distinctly not himself.
The 50 Greatest Hits is a compilation album by American singer Elvis Presley, originally released on November 18, 2000. It features 50 of Presley's best known songs and was re-released on 11 August 2017 to mark 40 years since his death.[2]
Elvis plays Rusty Wells in Girl Happy, a rollicking romp in which the lead singer of a 60s pop group is hired to take a gig in Fort Lauderdale during spring break. However, there's one big catch. Wells must look after club owner Big Frank's wild teenage daughter, Val (Shelley Fabares). It's one of Elvis' best movies set at the beach.
Often lauded by critics as Elvis' best post-army film, Viva Las Vegas combines excellent music with the adrenaline-fueled excitement of a racecar film. Elvis often combined the two, but rarely this well. Much of the credit goes to his electric chemistry with costar Ann-Margret.
The great Don Siegel directed Elvis in Flaming Star, in which he plays a half-blooded indigenous American named Pacer Burton. The Texas-set film uses some of the best movie tropes from westerns when Pacer is torn between his two cultures fighting for supremacy.
Both Elvis films released in 1957 are among his four best of all time, according to IMDb. The first to come out was Loving You, one of the best music biopics of the decade. The semiautobiographical account traces a small-time musician reaching superstardom.
Elvis' third feature film is also his third-best, so says IMDb. Named for his iconic song of the same name, Jailhouse Rock centers on Vince Everett, a young hood serving a one-year jail sentence for manslaughter. While inside, Vince's cellmate gives him a taste of the music business.
According to IMDb, King Creole is Elvis Presley's best movie of all time. In the fourth film of his career, Elvis plays Danny Fisher, a school flunky forced by his father to perform at the King Creole nightclub in swinging New Orleans.
Elvis is portrayed by Dale Midkiff in the 1988 film Elvis and Me, which tells the tale of Priscilla Presley's marriage to Elvis. The movie, which was nominated for a People's Choice Award for Favorite TV Movie/Miniseries, is based on the book of the same name by Priscilla Presley. Using source material from someone who was actually there and lived the love story is the best way to get a great film in this case.
Another film that highlighted a celebrity with ties to Elvis Presley was Walk the Line, in which Tyler Hilton, best known for his part in the adolescent drama One Tree Hill, portrays Elvis. Walk the Line, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash, is an account of Cash's journey to stardom and is based on the two memoirs written by Cash. Although Hilton's part in the film is not very significant, it honors a relationship that the two musicians shared before becoming well-known. Walk the Line garnered favorable reviews from both critics and viewers, receiving seven Oscar nominations and making a whopping $187 million on only a $28 million budget.
Butler is not the first to step into the rhinestone jumpsuit nor will he be the last, and it got us thinking about all of the different portrayals we've seen of Elvis over the years. Presley was so much more than a rock and roll icon, he also served as a vessel for pop culture conspiracies and public ire toward the end of his life. And so, there have been a variety of different interpretations of the man, the myth, and the gyrating hip. Here are 15 of the very best, ranked, and not including Austin Butler who very well could take home the gold after \"Elvis\" hits theaters on June 24, 2022.
Blake Rayne (real name Ryan Pelton) was constantly told that he looked like a young Elvis Presley growing up, so it's no surprise that it was his winning an Elvis impersonator contest that nabbed him an agent and a new career as a professional impersonator. In 2014, Rayne was booked to play dual roles in a film called \"The Identical\" a thinly-veiled musical fantasy about two twins who are separated at birth with one growing up to be the rock legend \"Drexel Hemsley\" (it's Elvis without saying Elvis) and the other adopted by a conservative preacher played by Ray Liotta. Rayne is truly trying his best in this role, but \"The Identical\" is ... well, it's got a whopping 6% on Rotten Tomatoes. Rayne easily has one of the best Elvis looks in the game, but an uncanny resemblance can't save a lackluster final product.
First things first, Kevin Spacey can f*** off into the sun and I hope every glass of coffee ever poured for him is room temperature at best and every waking moment is spent with the particular brand of stomachache you get right before you have explosive diarrhea, but without the sweet release of actually passing said diarrhea. With that out of the way, Michael Shannon in \"Elvis & Nixon\" is one of the oddest and yet somehow most perfect portrayals ever put to screen. Does he look like him Not in the slightest Does it matter Also no.
Out of all the Presley films, this one is probably his best, and it's still under-appreciated when it comes to films like Viva Las Vegas and King Creole. Anyone can pull off a dramatic role, but when it comes to comedic timing and singing, that's where the strength lies. After returning from war himself, it made sense for Colonel Tom Parker to make him a soldier and show audiences a different side of Presley.
